In accordance with Census 2011 there are 16,012 Sherpa speakers in India covering 0,001 % of the country's total population.
Sherpa language is mainly spoken in:
- Sikkim - सिक्किम (13,681 with 2.24 % of the state's population),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (1,311),
- Himachal Pradesh - हिमाचल प्रदेश (565),
- Arunachal Pradesh - अरुणाचल प्रदेश (211) and
- Assam - असम (124).
In Sikkim state, the Sherpa speakers are noticed the highest in:
- South District - दक्षिण जिला (4,684),
- West District - पश्चिम जिला (4,172),
- East District - पूर्व जिला (3,240) and
- North District - उत्तर जिला (1,585).
Outside Sikkim, Sherpa speakers are significant in West Bengal in Darjiling - दार्जिलिंग (945) and Jalpaiguri - जलपाईगुड़ी (345); in Himachal Pradesh in Kullu - कुल्लू (372); and in Arunachal Pradesh in West Kameng - पश्चिमी कामेंग (120).
