In accordance with Census 2011 there are 50,772,631 Urdu speakers in India covering 4,19 % of the country's total population.
Substantial proportion of Urdu speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Uttar Pradesh - उतार प्रदेश। (21.31 %, 10.83 % of the state's population),
- Bihar - बिहार (17.27 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (14.85 %),
- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - आंध्र प्रदेश (14.78 %) and
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (13.04 %).
In Uttar Pradesh, the highest percentage of Urdu speakers is noticed in:
- Rampur - रामपुर (23.04 %)(Uttar Pradesh),
- Kishanganj - किशनगंज (32.62 %)(Bihar) and
- Dharwad - धारवाड़ (18.40 %)(Karnataka).
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the highest proportion of Urdu speakers among districts are noticed in Telangana in Hyderabad - हैदराबाद (43.24 %), Nizamabad - निजामाबाद (14.97 %), Medak - मेदक (10.85 %), in Andra Pradesh in Kurnool - कर्नूल (15.21 %), in Maharashtra in Akola - अकोला (17.33 %), Aurangabad - औरंगाबाद (14.51 %) and Mumbai - मुंबई (13.53 %).
