In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,128,228 Mundari speakers in India covering 0,09 % of the country's total population.
Mundari speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (83.50 %, 2.86 % of the state's population),
- Odisha - ओडिशा (10.95 %),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (2.62 %) and
- Assam - असम (02.11 %).
Among the districts in Jharkhand, the highest proportion of Manipuri speakers is noticed in:
- Khunti - खूंटी (61.72 %),
- Simdega - सिमडेगा (22.50 %) and
- Pashchimi Singhbhum - पश्चिमी सिंहभूम (2.73 %).
Outside Jharkhand, Mundari language is spoken significantly in Odisha in Mayurbhanj - मयूरभंज (3.45 %) and Sundargarh - सुन्दरगढ़ (0.80 %), in Arunachal Pradesh in Changlang - चांगलांग (0.65 %) and Lohit - लोहित (0.20 %), in Assam in Udalguri - उदालगुड़ी (0.53 %) and Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (0.41 %).
