In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,011,294 Tripuri speakers in India covering 0,08 % of the country's total population.
Tripuri language speakers are mainly recorded in:
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (94.03 %, 25.88 % of the state's population),
- Mizoram - मिजोरम (3.23 %),
- Assam - असम (2.26 %) and
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (0.27 %).
Among the districts in Tripura, the highest proportion of Tripuri speakers is registered in:
- Dhalai - धलाई (41.57 %),
- South Tripura - दक्षिण त्रिपुरा (30.86 %),
- West Tripura - पश्चिम त्रिपुरा (23.41 %) and
- North Tripura - उत्तर त्रिपुरा (17.20 %).
Outside Tripura, significant number of Tripuri speakers are recorded in Mizoram in Mamit - मामित (17.64 %), Lawngtlai - लोंगत्लाई (7.22 %), Kolasib - कोलासिब (4.63 %), and Lunglei - लुंगलेई (2.94 %), in Assam in Hailakandi - हाइलाकान्डी (2.11 %) and in Meghalaya in West Khasi Hills - वेस्ट खासी हिल्स (0.52 %).
