In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,846,427 Tulu speakers in India covering 0,15 % of the country's total population.
Tulu speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (86.39 %),
- Kerala - केरल (6.73 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (6.50 %),
- Tamil Nadu - तमिलनाडु (0.14 %),
- Gujarat - गुजरात (0.06 %) and
- Goa - गोवा (0.05 %).
Among the districts in Karnataka, the highest proportion of Tulu speakers is noticed in:
- Dakshina Kannada - दक्षिण कन्नडा (48.57 %),
- Udupi - उडुपी (31.44 %),
- Kodagu - कोडगु (8.92 %),
- Chikmagalur - चिक्कमगलूरू (5.52 %) and
- Hassan - हासन (1.22 %).
Other than Karnataka, the highest proportion of Tulu speakers are available in Kerala in Kasaragod - कासर्गोट्h (8.77 %) and Wayanad - वयनाट् (0.35 %), in Maharashtra in Mumbai Suburban - मुंबई उपनगर (0.62 %) and Thane - थाने (0.41 %).
