In accordance with Census 2011 there are 20,154 Tamang speakers in India covering 0,002 % of the country's total population.
Tamang speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Manipur - मणिपुर (11,734 with 1.92 % of the state's population),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (3,821),
- Assam - असम (2,063),
- Arunachal Pradesh - अरुणाचल प्रदेश (1,057),
- Himachal Pradesh - हिमाचल प्रदेश (584) and
- Manipur - मणिपुर (537),
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (135).
Among the districts in Sikkim, the highest number of Tamang speakers is noticed in:
- East District - पूर्व जिला (4,221),
- South District - दक्षिण जिला (3,610),
- West District - पश्चिम जिला (2,782) and
- North District - उत्तर जिला (1,121).
Outside Sikkim, Tamang speakers are available in West Bengal in Jalpaiguri - जलपाईगुड़ी (3,051) and Darjiling - दार्जिलिंग (707); in Assam in Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (697), Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (522), Golaghat - गोलाघाट (383) and Sonitpur - सोनितपुर (141); in Manipur in Senapati - सेनापति (522), in Himachal Pradesh in Kullu - कुल्लू (413) and Kangra - कांगड़ा (121) and in Arunachal Pradesh in Lohit - लोहित (325), Lower Dibang Valley - लोवर दिवांग वैली (522) and West Kameng - पश्चिमी कामेंग (522).
