In accordance with Census 2011 there are 69,026,881 Tamil speakers in India covering 5,70 % of the country's total population.
Tamil speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Tamil Nadu - तमिलनाडु (92.36 %, 88.37 % of the state's population),
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (3.06 %),
- Puducherry - पुदुचेरी (1.59 %),
- Andhra Pradesh - आंध्र प्रदेश and Telangana (01.03 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (0.74 %),
- Kerala - केरल (0.73 %) and
- Delhi - दिल्ली (0.12 %).
Among the districts in Tamil Nadu, the highest proportion of Tamil speakers is noticed in:
- Nagapattinam - नागप्पट्टिणम (99.42 %),
- Thiruvarur - तिरुवारूर (99.40 %),
- Ariyalur - अरियलूर (99.27 %),
- Pudukkottai - पुदुक्कोट्टई (99.23 %),
- Sivaganga - सिवगंगा (99.14 %),
- Tirunelveli - तिरूनलवेली (98.54 %),
- Perambalur - पेरम्बलूर (97.92 %) and
- Ramanathapuram - रामनाथपुरम (97.67 %).
Outside Tamil Nadu state, significant proportion of Tamil speakers are recorded in Puducherry UT in Karaikal - कारैक्काल (98.29 %) and Puducherry - पुडुचेरी (95.12 %), in Andaman & Nicobar Islands UT in South Andaman - दक्षिण अण्डमान (20.70 %), Nicobars - निकोबार (6.10 %) and North and Middle Andaman - उत्तर और मध्य अण्डमान (5.94%) and in Kerala in Palakkad - पालक्काट् (4.95%).
