In accordance with Census 2011 there are 32,247 Shina speakers in India covering 0,003 % of the country's total population.
Shina speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Jammu and Kashmir - जम्मू और कश्मीर (32,027 with 0.26 % of the state's population) and
- Assam - असम (103).
Among the districts in Jammu and Kashmir, the highest number of Shinai speakers is noticed in:
- Bandipore - बान्डीपोर (16,407),
- Kargil (11,796),
- Ganderbal - गान्दरबल (2,917),
- Srinagar - श्रीनगर (191).
Outside Jammu and Kashmir, Shina is not spoken significantly in any State/UT. However, the Shina speakers are available in remaining districts with below 55 in number.
