In accordance with Census 2011 there are 7,368,192 Santali speakers in India covering 0,61 % of the country's total population.
The major share of Santali speakers is in the states of:
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (44.38 %, 9.91 % of the state's population),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (32.97 %),
- Odisha - ओडिशा (11.71 %) and
- Bihar - बिहार (6.23 %).
Among the districts, the highest proportion of Santali speakers is noticed in:
- Dumka - दुमका (39.71 %),
- Pakur - पाकुड़ (36.40 %),
- Jamtara - जामताड़ा (29.10 %),
- Sahibganj - साहिबगंज (21.86 %),
- Godda - गोड्डा (20.60 %),
- Purbi Singhbhum - पूर्वी सिंहभूम (15.92 %),
- Saraikela Kharsawan - सरायकेला-खरसावां (15/62 %) and
- Bokaro - बोकारो (11.39 %).
The highest proportion of Santali speakers is noticed in Mayurbhanj - मयूरभंज (24.81 %), Chirang - चिरांग (4.73%), Narayanpur - नारायणपु (11.36 %), Puruliya - पुरूलिया (11.17 %), and Dakshin Dinajpur - दक्षिण दिनाजपुर (9.86 %).
