In accordance with Census 2011 there are 24821 Sanskrit speakers in India covering 0,002 % of the country's total population.
Sanskrit speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (15.32 %),
- Bihar - बिहार (13.65 %),
- Uttar Pradesh - उतार प्रदेश। (12.34 %) and
- Rajasthan - राजस्थान 9.57 %).
Among the districts the highest proportion of Sanskrit speakers is noticed in:
- Lahul & Spiti - लाहुल और स्पिति (0.80 %),
- Una - ऊना (0.05 %),
- Solan - सोलन (0.04 %) and
- Hamirpur - हमीरपुर and Kullu - कुल्लू (0.01 %).
