In accordance with Census 2011 there are 33,124,726 Punjabi speakers in India covering 2,74 % of the country's total population.
Substantial proportion of Punjabi speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Punjab - पंजाब (75.22 %, 89.82 % of the state's population),
- Haryana - हरयाणा (7.25 %),
- Rajasthan - राजस्थान (6.87 %) and
- Delhi - दिल्ली (2.64 %).
Among the districts in Punjab, the highest proportion of Punjabi speakers is noticed in:
- Tarn Taran - तरन तारन (98.99 %),
- Mansa - मानसा (96.53 %),
- Moga - मोगा (96.21 %),
- Gurdaspur - गुरदासपुर (95.79 %),
- Barnala - बरनाला (95.14 %),
- Sangrur - संगरूर (94.87 %),
- Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar - शहीद भगत सिंह नगर (94.63 %),
- Amritsar - अमृतसर (94.30 %) and
- Hoshiarpur - होशियारपुर (93.74 %).
Significant proportion of Punjabi speakers outside Punjab is noticed in Himachal Pradesh in Bilaspur - बिलासपुर (80.38 %), Una - ऊना (29.68 %) and Solan - सोलन (9.15 %), Sirsa - सिरसा (73.30 %), Fatehabad - फतेहाबाद) (41.29 %), Kurukshetra - कुरूक्षेत्र (17.47 %), Ambala - अम्बाला (10.96 %) and Karnal - करनाल (10.86 %).
