In accordance with Census 2011 there are 37,521,324 Odia speakers in India covering 3,10 % of the country's total population.
Odia speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Odisha - ओडिशा (92.51 %, 82.70 % of the state's population),
- Chhattisgarh - छत्तीसगढ (2.43 %),
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (1.42 %),
- Andhra Pradesh - आंध्र प्रदेश and Telangana (0.96 %),
- Assam - असम (0.58 %),
- Gujarat - गुजरात (0.49 %) and
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (0.43 %).
Among the districts in Odisha, the highest proportion of Odia speakers is noticed in:
- Baudh - बौद्ध (99.31 %),
- Nayagarh - नयागढ़ (99.09 %),
- Subarnapur - सुबर्णपुर (90.00 %),
- Balangir - बलांगिर (98.28 %),
- Dhenkanal - ढ़ेंकानाल (96.20 %),
- Anugul - अनुगुल (95.50 %),
- Kalahandi - कलाहाण्डि (95.22 %),
- Puri - पुरी (95.09 %) and
- Bargarh - बरगढ़ (93.60 %).
Outside Odisha significant proportion of Odia speakers is noticed in Jharkhand in Pashchimi Singhbhum - पश्चिमी सिंहभूम (18.74 %), Saraikela Kharsawan - सरायकेला-खरसावां (9.48 %), and Purbi Singhbhum - पूर्वी सिंहभूम (5.27 %), in Chhattisgarh in Mahasamund - महासमुन्द (18.38 %), Bastar - बस्तर (16.58 %), Raigarh - रायगढ़ (9.52 %) and Raipur - रायपुर (5.17 %).
