In accordance with Census 2011 there are 50,925 Zemi speakers in India covering 0,004 % of the country's total population.
Zemi is mainly spoken in:
- Assam - असम (20,723 with 0.07 % of the state's population),
- Manipur - मणिपुर (18,795 with 0.66 % of the state's population) and
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (11,165 with 0.56 % of the state's population).
Among the districts in Assam, Zemi speakers is registerd the highest in:
- Dima Hasao - दीमा हसाव (20,657).
In Manipur, Zemi speakers are mainly found in:
- Tamenglong - तामेंलों (11,181) and
- Senapati - सेनापति (7,576).
In Nagaland, Zemi speakers are the highest in:
- Peren - पेरेन (10,823),
- Kohima - कोहिमा (203) and
- Dimapur - दीमापुर (125).
Outside these 3 states, the Zemi speakers are also noticed in other districts but with below 60 in number.
