In accordance with Census 2011 there are 10,802 Sema speakers in India covering 0,001 % of the country's total population.
Sema language are mainly spoken in:
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (8,268 with 0.42´% of the state's total population),
- Assam - असम (1,945) and
- Manipur - मणिपुर (104).
Among the districts in Nagaland, the highest Sema speakers are registered in:
- Dimapur - दीमापुर (3,867),
- Kohima - कोहिमा (1,693),
- Zunheboto - जुन्हेबोटो (831),
- Wokha - वोखा (462),
- Longleng - लोंगलेंग (367),
- Kiphire - कीफिरे (364) and
- Mokokchung - मोकोकचुंग (194).
Outside Nagaland, the Sema speakers are significant in Assam in Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (956) and Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (816). In remaining are reported below 50.
