In accordance with Census 2011 there are 187,276 Tangkhul speakers in India covering 0,02 % of the country's total population.
Tangkhul speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Manipur - मणिपुर (183,091 with 6.41 % of the state's population),
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (2,018),
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (951),
- Delhi - दिल्ली (310) and
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (209).
Among the districts in Manipur, the highest number of Tangkhul speakers is noticed in:
- Ukhrul - उखरूल (163,582),
- Senapati - सेनापति (11,473),
- Imphal East - इम्फाल पूर्व (4,208),
- Imphal West - इम्फाल पश्चिम (1,724),
- Chandel - चान्देल (1,228),
- Churachandpur - चुराचान्दपुर (657) and
- Thoubal - थौबाल (160).
Outside Manipur, Tangkhul is not spoken significantly in any State/UT. However, Tangkhul speakers are available in Nagaland in dimapur (1,481), Kohima - कोहिमा (261) and in Phek - फ़ेक (103); in Meghalaya in East Khasi Hills - ईस्ट खासी हिल्स (805), and Ribhoi - रिभोइ (108) and in Karnataka in Bangalore - बेंगलूरू (1,481).
