In accordance with Census 2011 there are 260,008 Ao speakers in India covering 0,02 % of the country's total population.
The significant proportion of Manipuri speakers are concentrated in
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (231,084 with 11.68 % of the state's population),
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (19,316 ),
- Assam - असम (4,092),
- Manipur - मणिपुर (2,529),
- Arunachal Pradesh - अरुणाचल प्रदेश (1,891),
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (423),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (192) and
- Delhi - दिल्ली (100).
Among the districts in Nagaland, the highest proportion of Ao speakers is noticed in:
- Mokokchung - मोकोकचुंग (168,250),
- Dimapur - दीमापुर (41,925),
- Kohima - कोहिमा (14,378),
- Mon - मोन (1,476),
- Tuensang - त्युएनसांग (1,382),
- Wokha - वोखा (1,141),
- peren (1,030) and
- Phek - फ़ेक (543).
Outside Nagaland, significant number of Ao speakers are recorded in Tripura in South Tripura - दक्षिण त्रिपुरा (12,823), West Tripura - पश्चिम त्रिपुरा (3,777) and Dhalai - धलाई (2,640), in Manipur in Chandel - चान्देल (2,368), in Arunachal PradeSh in Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (2,223), Sonitpur - सोनितपुर (498),Jorhat - जोरहाट (258) and Lakhimpur - लखीमपुर (258).
