In accordance with Census 2011 there are 2,926,168 Nepali speakers in India covering 0,24 % of the country's total population.
Substantial share of Nepali speakers in:
- Sikkim - सिक्किम (62.60 %, 53.30 % of the state's population),
- Arunachal Pradesh - अरुणाचल प्रदेश (6.89 %),
- Manipur - मणिपुर (2.23 %),
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (2.20 %),
- Assam - असम (1.91 %),
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (1.84 %),
- Himachal Pradesh - हिमाचल प्रदेश (1.30 %),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (1.27 %) and
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (1.05 %).
Among the districts, the significant proportion of Nepali speakers is noticed in:
- South District - दक्षिण जिला (72.66 %),
- East District - पूर्व जिला (65.59 %),
- West District - पश्चिम जिला (58.48 %),
- North District - उत्तर जिला (23.24 %) and
- Darjiling - दार्जिलिंग (46.99 %).
The substantial proportion of Nepali speakers is noticed in Manipur in Senapati - सेनापति (8.15 %) and Imphal West - इम्फाल पश्चिम (2.01 %), in Assam in Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (7.52 %), Sonitpur - सोनितपुर (7.04 %), Dima Hasao - दीमा हसाव (6.36 %), Udalguri - उदालगुड़ी (5.60 %), Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (5.38 %), Dhemaji - धेमाजी (5.26 %) and Baksa - बाक्सा (3.55 %).
