In accordance with Census 2011 there are 83,026,680 Marathi speakers in India covering 6,86 % of the country's total population.
Marathi speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (93.30 %, 68.93 % of the state's population),
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (2.49 %),
- Madhya Pradesh - मध्य प्रदेश (1.48 %) and
- Gujarat - गुजरात (1.11 %).
Among the districts in Maharashtra, the highest proportion of Marathi speakers is noticed in:
- Bhandara - भंडारा (93.19 %),
- Satara - सातारा (93.05 %),
- Sindhudurg - सिंधुदुर्ग (91.22 %),
- Kolhapur - कोल्हापूर (89.16 %),
- Ahmadnagar - अहमदनगर (88.89 %),
- Ratnagiri - रत्नागिरि (88.18 %),
- Wardha - वर्धा (87.78 %),
- Sangli - सांगली (85.97 %) and
- Osmanabad - उस्मानाबाद (85.42 %).
Outside Maharashtra the significant proportion of Marathi speakers is noticed in Burhanpur - बुरहानपुर (26.97 %) and Balaghat - बालाघाट (16.41 %), in Madhya Pradesh in Betul - बैतूल (12.86 %), Chhindwara - छिन्दवाड़ा (10.32 %), in Karnataka in Belgaum - बेलगांव (18.70 %), Bidar - बीदर (18.41 %), in Goa in North Goa - उत्तर गोवा (18.35 %) and in Andhra Pradesh in Adilabad - अदिलाबाद (13.61 %).
