In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,761,079 Manipuri speakers in India covering 0,15 % of the country's total population.
The significant proportion of Manipuri speakers are concentrated in
- Manipur - मणिपुर (86.43 %, 53.30 % of the state's population),
- Assam - असम (9.55 %),
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (1.35 %),
- Nagaland - नगालैंड (0.54 %) and
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (0.25 %).
Among the 9 districts in Manipur, the highest proportion of Manipuri speakers is noticed in:
- Thoubal - थौबाल (98.46 %),
- Bishnupur - बिष्णुपुर (97.87 %),
- Imphal West - इम्फाल पश्चिम (90.90 %) and
- Imphal East - इम्फाल पूर्व (85.19 %).
In Assam state the highest proportion of Manipuri speakers is noticed in Cachar - कछार (6.06 %) and Hailakandi - हाइलाकान्डी (1.92 %), in Nagaland in Dimapur - दीमापुर (1.58 %), and in Tripura in Dhalai - धलाई (1.46 %).
