In accordance with Census 2011 there are 34,838,819 Malayalam speakers in India covering 2,88 % of the country's total population.
Substantial proportion of Malayalam speakers is concentrated in the states of:
- Kerala - केरल (93.04 %, 97.03 % of the state's population),
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (2.22 %),
- Tamil Nadu - तमिलनाडु (2.08 %) and
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (1.75 %).
Among the districts in Kerala, the highest proportion of Malayalam speakers is noticed in:
- Malappuram - मलप्पुऱम (99.46 %),
- Pathanamthitta - पत्तनमतिट्टा (99.13 %),
- Kollam - कोल्लम (99.10%),
- Kozhikode - कोषिक्कोट् (99.05 %),
- Alappuzha - आलप्पुष़ा (99.00 %),
- Thrissur - तृशूर (98.91 %),
- Kannur - कण्णूर and Kottayam - कोट्टयम (98.88 each %),
- Thiruvananthapuram - तिरूवनंतपुरम (98.25 %),
- Ernakulam - एरणाकुलम (96.70 %),
- Wayanad - वयनाट् (96.05 %),
- Palakkad - पालक्काट् (93.71 %) and
- Kasaragod - कासर्गोट्h (82.69 %).
Significant proportion of Malayalam speakers is noticed in Mahe - माही (98.79 %),Puducherry - पुडुचेरी and Lakshadweep - लक्षद्वीप (84.17 %), Kodagu - कोडगु (25.57 %), Dakshina Kannada - दक्षिण कन्नडा (9.97 %), Bangalore - बेंगलूरू (2.94 %) and Chikmagalur - चिक्कमगलूरू (2.48 %).
