In accordance with Census 2011 there are 13,583,464 Maithili speakers in India covering 1,12 % of the country's total population.
Substantial proportion of Maithili speakers is mainly concentrated in:
- Bihar - बिहार (96.17 %, 12.55 % of the state's population),
- Delhi - दिल्ली (0.91 %),
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (0.40 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (0.35 %),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (0.22 %),
- Haryana - हरयाणा (0.19 %) and
- Uttar Pradesh - उतार प्रदेश। (0.18 %).
Among the districts in Bihar, the highest proportion of Maithili speakers is noticed in:
- Madhubani - मधुबनी (84.07 %),
- Supaul - सुपौल (76.31 %),
- Darbhanga - दरभंगा (72.75 %),
- Saharsa - सहरसा (68.87 %),
- Madhepura - मधेपुरा (38.43 %),
- Samastipur - समस्तीपुर (30.79 %),
- Araria - अररिया (20.57 %) and
- Purnia - पूर्णिया (10.72 %).
Significant proportion of Maithili speakers outside Bihar are in Udham Singh Nagar - उधम सिंह नगर (2.99 %), in Uttarakhand in Purbi Singhbhum - पूर्वी सिंहभूम (1.28 %), Bokaro - बोकारो (1.14 %) and Saraikela Kharsawan - सरायकेला-खरसावां (1.05 %).
