In accordance with Census 2011 there are 47,331 Lepcha speakers in India covering 0,004 % of the country's total population.
Lepcha speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Sikkim - सिक्किम ((38,313) with 6.27 % of the state's population),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (8,637) and
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (147).
Among the districts in Sikkim, the highest number of Lepcha speakers is noticed in:
- North District - उत्तर जिला (13,860),
- East District - पूर्व जिला (9,666),
- West District - पश्चिम जिला (9,490) and
- South District - दक्षिण जिला (5,297).
Outside Sikkim, Lepcha is spoken significantly in Darjiling - दार्जिलिंग (8,414) and Jalpaiguri - जलपाईगुड़ी (153).
