In accordance with Census 2011 there are 6,797,587 Kashmiri speakers in India covering 0,56 % of the country's total population.
Kashmiri speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Jammu and Kashmir - जम्मू और कश्मीर (98.28 %, 53.27 % of the state's population),
- Himachal Pradesh - हिमाचल प्रदेश (0.84 %)and
- Delhi - दिल्ली (0.27 %).
Among the districts in Jammu and Kashmir, the highest proportion of Kashmiri speakers is noticed in:
- Badgam - बडगाम (94.78 %),
- Srinagar - श्रीनगर (94.14 %),
- Kulgam - कुलगाम (91.91 %),
- Pulwama - पुलवामा(न.स. (91.30 %),
- Shupiyan - शुपियन (87.99 %),
- Anantnag - अनन्तनाग (85.10 %),
- Bandipore - बान्डीपोर (82.39 %),
- Baramula - बारामूला (82.11 %),
- Kupwara - कुपवाड़ा (71.19 %),
- Ganderbal - गान्दरबल (69.27 %),
- Kishtwar - किश्तवाड़ (68.59 %),
- Ramban - रामबन (87.84 %) and
- Doda - डोडा (55.51 %),
Significant percentage of Kashmiri speakers outside Jammu & Kashmir are available in Kullu - कुल्लू (10.41 %), Chamba - चम्बा (1.32 %), in Himachal Pradesh in Mandi - मण्डी (0.21 %), and Shimla - शिमला (0.13 %), in NCT of Delhi in South - दक्षिणी (0.19 %), South West - दक्षिण पश्चिम and New Delhi - नई दिल्ली) (0.18 each %), East - पूर्वी (0.13 %).
