In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,988,350 Kurukh/Oraon speakers in India covering 0,16 % of the country's total population.
The significant proportion of Kurukh/Oraon speakers are concentrated in
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (2.89 %),
- Chhattisgarh - छत्तीसगढ (2.02 %),
- Odisha - ओडिशा (0.32 %),
- Assam - असम (0.24 %),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (0.19 %) and
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands - अंडमान व नोकोबार द्वीप समूह ((3.96 %).
Among the districts in Jharkhand, the highest proportion of Kurukh/ Oraon speakers is noticed in:
- Lohardaga - लोहरदगा (38.96 %),
- Gumla - गुमला (29.61 %),
- Latehar - लातेहार (18.31 %),
- Ranchi - रांची (7.52 %),
- Chatra - चतरा (1.72 %) and
- Simdega - सिमडेगा (1.44 %).
Significant proportion of Kurukh/Oraon speakers outside Jharkhand, is returned from ChhattiSgarh in Jashpur - जशपुर (27.57 %), Surguja - सरगुजा (7.60 %) and Raigarh - रायगढ़ (4.04 %), in Andaman & Nicobar Islands in North and Middle Andaman - उत्तर और मध्य अण्डमान (6.18 %), Nicobars - निकोबार (3.31 %) and South Andaman - दक्षिण अण्डमान (3.07 %) and in West Bengal in Sundargarh - सुन्दरगढ़ (5.57 %), Sambalpur - सम्बलपुर (0.78 %) and Jharsuguda - झारसुगुडा (0.62 %).
