In accordance with Census 2011 there are 43,706,512 Kannada speakers in India covering 3,61 % of the country's total population.
The significant proportion of Kannada speakers are concentrated in the states of:
- Karnataka - कर्नाटक (93.01 %, 66.54 % of the state's population),
- Tamil Nadu - तमिलनाडु (2.94 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (2.29%) and
- Andhra Pradesh - आंध्र प्रदेश (1.22 %).
Among the districts in Karnataka, the highest proportion of Kannada speakers is noticed in:
- Mandya - मंड्या (91.92 %),
- Hassan - हासन (87.04 %),
- Chamarajanagar - चामराजनगरा (86;11 %)
- Bagalkot - बागलकोटे (86.07 %),
- Gadag - गदग (85.32 %),
- Tumkur (84.96 %),
- Koppal - कोप्पल (84.08 %),
- Ramanagara - रामनगरा (83.49 %),
- Chitradurga - चित्रदुर्गा (83.33 %),
- Mysore - मैसूरू (80.96 %),
- Bagalkot - बागलकोटे (86.07 %)and
- Davanagere - दावणगेरे (77.93 %).
Significant proportion of Kannada speaking population outside Karnataka are found in The Nilgiris - द नीलगिरि (24.25 %) and Krishnagiri - कृष्णगिरि (1270 %), Theni - थेनी (7.86 %), Coimbatore - कोयम्बत्तूर (6.97 %), in Tamil Nadu in Erode - ईरोड (5.57 %), in Maharashtra in Solapur - सोलापूर (9.28 %) and Sangli - सांगली (5.09 %), in Goa in South Goa - दक्षिण गोवा (5.28 %) and in Andhra Pradesh in Anantapur - अनंतपुर (and Sri Sathya Sai) (4.86 %).
