In accordance with Census 2011 there are 98,988 Hmar speakers in India covering 0,01 % of the country's total population.
Hmar speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Manipur - मणिपुर (49,081 with 1.72 % of the state's population),
- Mizoram - मिजोरम (17,981),
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (1,994),
- Delhi - दिल्ली (197) and
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (171).
Among the districts in Manipur, the highest number of Hmar speakers are available in:
- Churachandpur - चुराचान्दपुर (43,796),
- Imphal East - इम्फाल पूर्व (3,823),
- Imphal West - इम्फाल पश्चिम (655),
- Tamenglong - तामेंलों (460),
- Chandel - चान्देल (460) and
- Senapati - सेनापति (142).
Outside Manipur, number of Hmar speakers is significant in Assam in Dima Hasao - दीमा हसाव (16,375), Cachar - कछार (12,092) and Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (653), in Mizoram in Aizawl - आईज़ोल (11,050), Kolasib - कोलासिब (6,351) and Champhai - चमफाई (405), and in Meghalaya in East Khasi Hills - ईस्ट खासी हिल्स (1,299), Jaintia Hills - जैन्तिया हिल्स (582) and Ribhoi - रिभोइ (107).
