In accordance with Census 2011 there are 528,347,193 Hindi speakers in India covering 43,63 % of the country's total population.
The major share of Hindi speakers is in the states of
- Uttar Pradesh - उतार प्रदेश। (35.58 %),
- Bihar - बिहार (15.27 %),
- Madhya Pradesh - मध्य प्रदेश (12.17 %)
- Rajasthan - राजस्थान (11.60 %)
- Haryana - हरयाणा (4.22 %),
- Chhattisgarh - छत्तीसगढ (4.04 %),
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (4.04 %),
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (2.74 %),
- Delhi - दिल्ली (2.7 %)
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (1.74 %),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (1.2 %) and
- Himachal Pradesh - हिमाचल प्रदेश (1.12 %)
Out of 640 districts in India:
- 39 districts are in the range of 0.01 to 0.20 per cent,
- 306 districts in the range of 0.21 to 20 per cent,
- 47 districts in the range of 20.01 to 70 per cent,
- 58 districts in the range of 70.01 to 90 per cent, and
- 190 districts in the range of 90.01 per cent and above.
Among the districts the highest proportion of Hindi speakers is noticed in:
- Shajapur - शाजापुर (99.90 %) (Madhya Pradesh),
- Dausa - दौसा (99.88 %) (Rajasthan),
- Chitrakoot - चित्रकूट (99.87 %) (Uttar Pradesh),
- Rudraprayag - रुद्रप्रयाग (99.03 %) (Uttarakhand),
- Mahendragarh - महेन्द्रगढ़ (99.53 %) (Haryana),
- North West - उत्तर पश्चिम (90.46 %) (Delhi),
- Kodarma - कोडरमा (94.17 %) (Jharkhand),
- Hamirpur - हमीरपुर (98.31 %) (Himachal Pradesh).
Besides these states, proportion of Hindi speakers are noticed in Daman - दमन (45.89 %) and Doda - डोडा (38.33 %), Mumbai Suburban - मुंबई उपनगर (29.57 %), Mumbai - मुंबई, Thane - थाने, Gondiya - गोंदिया and Nagpur - नागपूर (26.16 %), and in Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (25.47 %), Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar - साहिबज़ादा अजीत सिंह नगर (24.03 %), Kolkata - कोलकाता (22.84 %), Sundargarh - सुन्दरगढ़ (23.38 %), Nuapada - नूआपड़ा (16.98 %), and Surat - सुरत (22.94 %).
