In accordance with Census 2011 there are 55,492,554 Gujarati speakers in India covering 4,58 % of the country's total population.
The significant proportion of Gujarati speakers is found in:
- Gujarat - गुजरात (93.63 %, 85.97 % of the state's population) and
- Maharashtra - महाराष्ट्र (4.27 %).
Among the districts of Gujarat, the highest proportion of Gujarati speakers is noticed in:
- Amreli - अमरेली (99.01 %),
- Surendranagar - सुरेन्द्रनगर (98.84 %),
- Bhavnagar - भावनगर (97.87 %),
- Sabar Kantha - साबर कांठा (97.86 %),
- Mahesana - महेसाणा (97.58 %),
- Kheda - खेडा (97.35 %),
- Junagadh - जूनागढ़ (96.84 %),
- Porbandar - पोरबंदर (96.76 %),
- Anand - आणंद (97.67 %),
- Panch Mahals - पंचमहाल (96.52 %).
Significant proportion of Gujarati speakers in the districts outside Gujarat are also noticed in Diu - दीव (97.99 %) and Daman - दमन (37.99 %), in Himachal Pradesh in Lahul & Spiti - लाहुल और स्पिति (26.53 %), Dadra and Nagar Haveli - दादरा और नागर हवेली (21.48 %) and in Maharashtra in Mumbai Suburban - मुंबई उपनगर (11.52 %) and Mumbai - मुंबई (11.34 %).
