In accordance with Census 2011 there are 1,145,323 Garo speakers in India covering 0,09 % of the country's total population.
Garo speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- Meghalaya - मेघालय (81.77 %, 31.56 % of the state's population),
- Assam - असम (15.06 %) and
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (1.84 %).
Among the districts in Meghalaya, the highest proportion of Garo speakers is noticed in:
- South Garo Hills - साउथ गारो हिल्स (94.72 %),
- East Garo Hills - ईस्ट गारो हिल्स (93.74 %),
- West Garo Hills - वेस्ट गारो हिल्स (64.41 %),
- West Khasi Hills - वेस्ट खासी हिल्स (12.64 %),
- Ribhoi - रिभोइ (5.74 %),
- East Khasi Hills - ईस्ट खासी हिल्स (3.08 %) and
- Jaintia Hills - जैन्तिया हिल्स (0.15 %).
Significant proportion of Garo speakers are recorded in Assam in Goalpara - गोवालपारा (7.56 %),Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (2.61 %) and Kamrup - कामरूप (1.86 %), in Arunachal Pradesh in Tirap - तिराप (5.22 %) and in Tripura in Dhalai - धलाई (1.87 %).
