In accordance with Census 2011 there are 38,915 Halam speakers in India covering 0,003 % of the country's total population.
Halam speakers are mainly concentrated in:
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (23,089 with 0.63 % of the state's population),
- Assam - असम (8,679) and
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (6,001).
Among the districts in Tripura, the highest proportion of Halam speakers is noticed in:
- North Tripura - उत्तर त्रिपुरा (9,033),
- Dhalai - धलाई (6,037),
- South Tripura - दक्षिण त्रिपुरा (5,747) and
- West Tripura - पश्चिम त्रिपुरा (2,272).
Outside Tripura, significant proportion of Halam speakers are recorded in Assam in Karimganj - करीमगंज (6,331), Dima Hasao - दीमा हसाव (1,940) and Hailakandi - हाइलाकान्डी (355), and in Uttarakhand in Pithoragarh - पिथौरागढ़ (5,623) and in Mizoram in Lahul & Spiti - लाहुल और स्पिति (379).
