In accordance with Census 2011 there are 97,237,669 Bengali speakers in India covering 8,03 % of the country's total population.
Bengali speakers are mainly concentrated in the states of:
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (80.93 %, 86.22 % of the state's population),
- Assam - असम (9.28 %),
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (3.30 %),
- Tripura - त्रिपुरा (2.48 %),
- Bihar - बिहार (0.83 %) and
- Odisha - ओडिशा (0.52 %).
Among the districts in Bengal, the highest proportion of Bengali speakers is noticed in:
- Murshidabad - मुर्शिदाबाद (98.49 %),
- Purba Medinipur - पूर्व मेदिनीपुर (98.28 %),
- Koch Bihar - कोच बिहार (98.11 %),
- Nadia - नदिया (98.02 %),
- South Twenty Four Parganas - दक्षिण चौबीस परगना (97.82 %),
- Birbhum - बीरभूम (92.38 %),
- Maldah - मालदा (91.04 %) and
- Bankura - बाँकुड़ा (90.67 %)
Outside West Bengal, significant proportion of Bengali SpeakerS are recorded in Karimganj - करीमगंज (86.85 %) Hailakandi - हाइलाकान्डी (84.72 %), Cachar - कछार (75.13 %), Barpeta - बरपेटा (61.74 %), Darrang - दरंग (48.49 %), in Assam in Dhalai - धलाई (44.16 %) and in Tripura in Pakur - पाकुड़ (39.42 %).
