In accordance with Census 2011 there are 27,506 Bhumij speakers in India covering 0,002 % of the country's total population.
The substantial share of Bhumij speakersis in the states of:
- Jharkhand - झारखंड (11,275 with 0.03 % of the state's population),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (6,977),
- Odisha - ओडिशा (5,912),
- Bihar - बिहार (963),
- Assam - असम (952) and
- Mizoram - मिजोरम (559).
In Jharkhand, significant numbers of Bhumij speakers are found in:
- Purbi Singhbhum - पूर्वी सिंहभूम (6,346),
- Saraikela Kharsawan - सरायकेला-खरसावां (2,006),
- Pashchimi Singhbhum - पश्चिमी सिंहभूम (1,227) and
- Ranchi - रांची (884).
Significant number of Bhumij speakers is also recorded in Assam in Udalguri - उदालगुड़ी (650), Sonitpur - सोनितपुर (137), in Bihar in Katihar - कटिहार (474) and Purnia - पूर्णिया (1.46 %), in Mizoram in South Andaman - दक्षिण अण्डमान (227) and North and Middle Andaman - उत्तर और मध्य अण्डमान (151).
