In accordance with Census 2011 there are 13,774 Balti speakers in India covering 0,001 % of the country's total population.
This language is mainly spoken in:
- Jammu and Kashmir - जम्मू और कश्मीर (12,399, with 0.10 % of the state's population),
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (1,173 ) and
- Bihar - बिहार (108).
In Jammu and Kashmir state, the highest number of Balti speakers is noticed in:
- Leh - लेह (लद्दाख (5,269),
- Kargil (4,556),
- Ganderbal - गान्दरबल (1,994) and
- Srinagar - श्रीनगर (350).
Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, a good number of Balti speakers are spread in Uttarakhand in Dehradun - देहरादून (1,168) and in Bihar in Araria - अररिया (108).
