Rai speakers is mainly spoken in:
- Sikkim - सिक्किम(7471),
- Arunachal Pradesh - अरुणाचल प्रदेश (3,897),
- Odisha - ओडिशा (1,810),
- Assam - असम (1,110),
- West Bengal - पश्चिम बंगाल (379) and
- Uttarakhand - उत्तराखंड (268).
Among the districts in Sikkim, the highest number of Rai speakers is noticed in:
- South District - दक्षिण जिला (2,423),
- West District - पश्चिम जिला (2,381),
- East District - पूर्व जिला (2,135) and
- North District - उत्तर जिला (532).
Among the districts in Arunachal Pradesh, the highest number of Rai speakers is noticed in:
- Kurung Kumey - कुरूंग कुमे (1,933),
- East Kameng - पूर्वी कामेंग (1,669) and
- Papum Pare - पापुम पारे (185).
Outside Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, significant number of Rai speakers are also recorded in Odisha in Sundargarh - सुन्दरगढ़ (1,805); in Assam in Karbi Anglong - कार्बी आंग्लंग (559), Golaghat - गोलाघाट (204) and Tinsukia - तिनसुकिया (202); in West Bengal in Darjiling - दार्जिलिंग (267); in Uttarakhand in Pithoragarh - पिथौरागढ़ (263); in Rajasthan in Ganganagar - गंगानगर (175); in Bihar in Supaul - सुपौल (159) and in Manipur in Senapati - सेनापति (146).
